From The Editors - By Clive Peckar MD FRCS, FRCOphth

EuroTimes’ circulation continues to grow; it is now over 21,000 with more0 and more of our colleagues, both inside and outside of Europe, requesting subscriptions. Interest in ophthalmic sub-specialisation, outside of the anterior segment, continues to be an important part of our remit and in this issue we have a number of articles on patients with thyroid ophthalmopathy.

During my visit to China last year I received an extremely warm welcome from all the ophthalmologists that I met. They all wanted to receive EuroTimes and to learn more about European ophthalmology. I was encouraged to explore ways of bridging the gap between Asian and European ophthalmology and to see if there was any way we could take our teaching methods to China, as it is still extremely difficult for the average Chinese ophthalmologist to attend our ESCRS meetings.

I was fortunate to be able to use my trip to the ICO in April, which was in Sydney Australia, as an opportunity to re-visit China and have further discussions with members of the Chinese Ophthalmological Society and the Chinese Medical Association. With their support, and that of the ESCRS, we have been able to arrange a Euro-Asian Congress, in Shanghai, from the 4th to 7th April 2003. This will be like a mini ESCRS meeting with symposia, didactic lectures, free papers and wet labs. The ophthalmic trade has, once again, risen to the occasion, with enthusiasm and support. I hope that this bringing together of European and Asian Ophthalmologists will be a memorable and educational experience for all of us.
