SOCIETY MATTERS

NEW EUROPEAN SOCIETY OF OPHTHALMIC NURSES AND TECHNICIANS

A new organisation for nurses and technicians, called the European Society of Ophthalmic Nurses and Technicians, will be launched at the ESCRS Congress in Nice in September.

The European Society of Ophthalmic Nurses and Technicians will be an entity in itself but will come under the auspices of the ESCRS and will be managed by a Committee approved by the ESCRS Board. The Committee will establish the terms of reference of the Society and, after the launch, will continue to oversee the maintenance and development of the organisation.

The members of the Committee are Mr Peter Barry MD, Ireland, Chairman; Mr Antonio Pedro Melo, Portugal, Technician; Ms Helen Pointer RN, UK; Mr Stephen Selindh RN, Sweden; and Dr Risto Uusitalo MD, Finland.

"With the growing number of nurses and technicians attending the Nurses Programme at the ESCRS Annual Congress, it has become clear that there is a need for such an organisation." said Dr Ulf Stenevi, President of the ESCRS.

"As one of a number of exciting development plans, the ESCRS Board recently approved the establishment of the new Society and I am truly delighted by this move. I am sure that the Society will prove beneficial to European ophthalmic nurses and technicians and hope that it will contribute to the general development of the ophthalmological community."

The first task of the Committee has been to put together the Nurses Programme for the Nice Congress. This is currently being finalised and will include the usual day-long programme of lectures and a schedule of wetlabs and training courses specifically for nurses and technicians. Full details will shortly be mailed out to past Programme attendees and will be posted on the ESCRS website.

EURO ASIAN OPHTHALMOLOGY CONGRESS
A Euro Asian Ophthalmology Congress, organised in association with the ESCRS and the Chinese Ophthalmological Society, will take place in Shanghai, China from 4 - 7 April 2003.

Topics will range from phacoemulsification and refractive surgery, including phakic implants, to glaucoma and vitreoretinal surgery. There will be sequential translation between English and Mandarin.

The ESCRS aims to organise approximately 20 international speakers as a faculty for the Congress and hopes for industry support to cover the travel costs of the group. Even at this early stage we have received a positive response from the industry and we are appreciative that their continued support will enable the ESCRS to play an important role in this exciting venture.

A NEW-LOOK WEBSITE
The ESCRS website plays an important part in communicating the Society's activities and news to its members. A webmaster is now based in the Office full-time and this ensures that the information on the website will always be fully up-to-date. The website has been re-designed and now has a clean more modern look to it. If you haven't visited the site for a while, take a look today and keep abreast of what is happening in your Society!
