Recent Developments in the Vision Care Industry
Intralase passes 100,000 milestone
More than 100,000 laser vision correction procedures have been performed with the IntraLase FS femtosecond laser, the company announced. The company now has an installed base of 80 lasers in North America and Asia. The femtosecond laser replaces the standard microkeratome used to create the corneal flap. The company now has a nine percent market share, according to the MarketScope research company.
Hand-held pachymeter
DGH Technology launched the Pachmate model DGH-55, a hand-held pachymeter weighing 3.6 ounces and measuring less than 7 inches long. The unit automatically switches from OD to OS. An LCD display shows the average and standard deviation for 25 separate measurements. The system comes with a calibration device, extra rechargeable batteries, battery charger and carrying case.
Morcher CTR approved
Morcher GmbH has received FDA approval for three of its capsular tension rings- types 14, 14A and 14C. The rings can be obtained in different diameters to accommodate individual variation in the size of patients' capsular bags. FCI Ophthalmics, Inc. will import and distribute the capsular tension rings throughout the United States.
Allergan acquires Oculex
Allergan received permission from the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to complete its acquisition of Oculex Pharmaceuticals. With the acquisition, Allergan gains Posurdex, a bioerodable, extended release implant that delivers dexamethasone to the back of the eye. Clinical trials are ongoing with Posurdex.
Ciba refocuses on presbyopia
The Refocus Group, partnered with CIBA Vision, filed a request with the FDA for an investigational device exemption for its scleral implants. This would allow it to conduct Phase II clinical trials of the product the surgical treatment of presbyopia.
NIDEK Receives CE Mark for Customised Aspheric Treatment Zone
Nidek announced that it has received CE Mark approval for its Customised Aspheric Treatment Zone (CATz) software for the company's EC-5000 Excimer Laser System. The approval allows Nidek to market its laser and custom treatment algorithm throughout European Union for the correction of myopia with or without astigmatism. CATz uses a proprietary ablation algorithm based on topography data that employs smooth treatment zones to create a seamless transition from the treated cornea to the untreated cornea. The company says that this results in a shorter visual recovery period and better post-operative visual acuity.
Name change for C&C
C&C Vision, maker of the CrystaLens accommodating IOL, announced that it had changed the company name to Eyeonics. The company recently received FDA approval the CrystaLens.
