Abstract Details

Purpose:

To present a novel technique improving success rate of eye-tracking in LASIK with Intralase 150-kHz femtosecond and WaveLight EX500 excimer laser.

Setting:

Universal Eye Center, ZhongLi, Taiwan.

Methods:

This retrospective case series comprised 53 eyes of 27 patients with myopia or myopic astigmatism who had LASIK with Intralase 150-kHz femtosecond and WaveLight EX500 excimer laser. When the opaque bubble layer (OBL) at hinge impeded eye tracking, using a LASIK spatula to cover the OBL along flap edge facilitated eye tracking. Preoperative and postoperative uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) and astigmatism were analyzed.

Results:

Eye tracking was successful in 51 (96.23%) eyes. The mean preoperative cylinder refraction was -0.85 diopters (D) ± 0.66 (SD). One month postoperatively, cylinder refraction was -0.31 ± 0.27 D. 46 (89.79%) eyes had cylinder within ± 0.5 D, and 53 (100%) eyes within ± 1.0 D. 40 (75.47%) eyes had UCVA 20/20 or better, and 53 eyes (100%) 20/30 or better.

Conclusions:

Covering OBL at hinge along flap edge with a LASIK spatula when in need can achieve high success rate of eye tracking. The LASIK result was effective, and the treatment of astigmatism was predictable.
