Abstract Details

Purpose:

To asses effectivity of the toric intraocular lens implantation for treatment of astigmatism in cataract surgery.

Setting:

Internet calculating softwares were used to choose proper toric IOL and positioning of cylindrical axis to achieve minimal postoperative astigmatism.

Methods:

The follow up group of 78 eyes (52 patients, 12 male, 40 female, average age 63±11.8 years) was examinated before surgery, 1st day post operation, 1st week and 1 month after operation. Uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), spherical diopters (Sph), cylindrical diopters (Cyl) and best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), before and postoperatively were evaluated. Statistical significant values were considered as p < 0.05.

Results:

Average UCVA, Sph, Cyl and BCVA before operation was: 0.22±0.19, 3.17±3.08 Ds, 2.18±1.12 D Cyl, 0.57±0.24 1st day post operation : 0.71±0.23, 0.17±0.32 Ds, 0.37±0.46 D Cyl, 0.81±0.2 1st week post operation: 0.74±0.19, 0.14±0.26 Ds, 0.43±0.44 D Cyl, 0.87±0.15 1 month post operation: 0.78±0.19, 0.12±0.25 Ds 0.39±0.42 D Cyl 0.91±0.13 Significant improvement of UCVA, BCVA and significant reduction Sph and Cyl of was confirmed statistically

Conclusions:

Implantation of toric IOLs is an effective method for astigmatism correction in cataract surgery.
