Abstract Details

Purpose:

Evaluation of the visual acuity as well as the reading performance of an apodized diffractive multifocal intraocular lens (MIOL) using the Salzburg Reading Desk (SRD).

Setting:

Univ. of Heidelberg, Dept. of Ophthalmology, IVCRC, Germany

Methods:

In a prospective, ethics committee approved clinical study 40 eyes (20 patients) who received the apodized diffractive AcrySof IQ ReSTOR MIOL +3.0 D (SN6AD1) were enrolled. Follow-up examinations included uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuity (UDVA, CDVA), uncorrected and distance corrected near visual acuity (UNVA, DCNVA) and uncorrected and distance corrected intermediate visual acuity (UIVA, DCIVA). Criteria for evaluating reading acuity were reading speed and print size which were measured with the SRD at fixed as well as at the patient’s preferred near and intermediate distances. All examinations were performed monocularly and binocularly. Additionally, a subjective questionnaire was performed.

Results:

All surgeries were uneventful. Intended refraction was achieved in all cases with no significant astigmatism. Monocular visual acuity results yielded a median UDVA of 0.00 logMAR (range: 0.26 to -0.14 logMAR) and a median CDVA of -0.08 logMAR (range: 0.16 to -0.24 logMAR). Median UNVA at 40cm was 0.04 (range: 0.24 to -0.10 logMAR) whereas median DCNVA was 0.00 logMAR (range: 0.18 to -0.22 logMAR). Median UIVA at 80cm was 0.15 logMAR (range: 0.40 to -0.18 logMAR) compared to a median DCIVA 0.16 logMAR (range: 0.42 to -0.14 logMAR). The SRD examinations resulted in an uncorrected reading acuity of 0.11 logMAR (range: 0.49 to -0.01 logMAR) at 40 cm and 0.30 logMAR (range: 0.48 to 0.00) at 80cm.

Conclusions:

The AcrySof IQ ReSTOR MIOL +3.0 D provides with its apodized diffractive design good postoperative functional results at far and near distances and also improves the visual and reading acuity at the intermediate distance. Patients reported a high rate of spectacle independence and satisfaction in everyday life.
