Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report the 6-month follow-up of the single-piece multifocal diffractive aspheric Bi-Flex-M intraocular lens (MIOL, Medicontur) after cataract surgery.

Setting:

Four university clinics or private ophthalmic surgical centers in Europe

Methods:

This prospective multicentre study comprised 25 patients (50 eyes) with bilateral cataract and eligible for MIOL implantation. Examinations including refraction, monocular and binocular visual acuity for distance, intermediate (60 cm) and near (40 cm), patient satisfaction (quality-of-life questionnaire) and incidence of PCO were scheduled at 1-month, 3-month and 6 month postoperatively.

Results:

At the 6-month follow-up, mean SE was 0.05±0.25 D; uncorrected monocular distance (UDVA), intermediate (UIVA) and near (UNVA) visual acuity was 0.1±0.17 logMAR (20/25), 0.3±0.16 logMAR (20/40) and 0.0±0.13 logMAR (20/20), respectively. Binocular UDVA, UIVA and UNVA were 0.0±0.04 logMAR (20/20), 0.2 ± 0.17 logMAR (20/32) and 0.0±0.10 logMAR (20/20), respectively. The quality-of-life questionnaire revealed that more then 95% of patients were not using spectacles at any time. The majority of patients did not experience night visual symptom such as glare, halo, and starburst. Overall, all patients were “very satisfied” (90%) or “satisfied” (10%) with the procedure. No eyes required neodymium:YAG capsulotomy.

Conclusions:

The new Bi-Flex-M MIOL provides good far, near and intermediate vision. The level of patient satisfaction was high due to high rate of spectacle independence and minimal photic phenomena at night.
