Evaluation of reading performance with the Salzburg Reading Desk of an extended depth of focus intraocular lens

Abstract Details

Purpose:

Evaluation of the visual and the reading performance of a new extended-depth of focus (EDOF) intraocular lens.

Setting:

International Vision Correction Research Centre (IVCRC) and David J Apple International Laboratory for Ocular Pathology

Methods:

In this ongoing prospective study 20 eyes of 10 patients have so far received the Tecnis Symfony IOL (Abbott Medical Optics Inc., USA). Follow up examinations included: Uncorrected (UDVA) and corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), uncorrected (UIVA) and distance corrected intermediate visual acuity (DCIVA) as well as uncorrected (UNVA) and distance corrected near visual acuity (DCNVA). Furthermore, the reading acuity at the preferred near and intermediate distance was calculated by the SRD with consideration of the reading distance, speed and the print size.

Results:

Results yielded a median UDVA of 0.06 logMAR (range: 0.44 to -0.14 logMAR) and a median UNVA of 0.20 logMAR (range: 0.46 to 0.00 logMAR) whereas median UIVA was 0.00 logMAR (range: 0.14 to -0.18 logMAR). The improved performance at intermediate distance was confirmed by the SRD, which showed an uncorrected reading acuity of 0.09 logMAR (range: 0.28 to 0.00 logMAR) at a preferred intermediate distance of 64.95 cm (range: 60.3 to 71.5 cm). The preferred near point was at 42.6 cm (range: 33.5 to 58.5 cm).

Conclusions:

The new EDOF IOL provides good results not only at far and intermediate distances but also provides an improvement of the near visual acuity. Therefore, patients reported a high rate of satisfaction and spectacle independence at various distances.
