Abstract Details

Purpose:

To determine the ideal range of post operative spherical equivalent which will give both good distance uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) and Near uncorrected visual acuity (NUCVA).

Setting:

Optimax and Ultralase Eye Clinics, London, UK

Methods:

Retrospective review of 500 consecutive cases performed by several surgeons in a multi centre review. The ideal spherical equivalent was determined by the greatest numbers of yes with UCVA of 20/25 or better and NUCVA of N8 or better.

Results:

The ideal postoperative spherical equivalent was between -0.25 to +0.25D. This achieves the highest percentage of patients with both UCVA of 20/25 (77%) or better and (68%) N8 or better. A negative defocus of -0.25D from emmetropia increases the number of patients with better near UCVA with no sacrifice of Distance UCVA. A positive defocus from emmetropia of up to +0.5D reduces near UCVA significantly while maintaining good levels of distance UCVA.

Conclusions:

Aiming for a post operative spherical equivalent close to emmetropia allows excellent levels of both Distance UCVA and Near UCVA. A slight negative defocus allows for better levels of near UCVA.
