Abstract Details

To identify histopathological changes in corneal button with corneal scar after healed microbial keratitis which underwent optical penetrating keratoplasty.

Department of Ophthalmology, National Institute of Medical Sciences and Hospital, NIMS University, Jaipur, India.

Clinical study of 50 patients who presented with healed corneal scar 6 months to 1 year after healing of active microbial keratitis and had penetrating keratoplasty.Haematoxylin and eosin stain done on corneal buttons & examined under 40 X magnification.

Analysed group consisted of 33 men & 17 women.Average age of patients was 51.42+16.75 years .Irregularity of epithelium was seen in 48 corneal button.Cellular infiltration comprising of mononuclear cells( lymphocytes & plasma cells) in 47 corneas .Cellular infiltration with vascularisation was in 26 corneas.Other finding included patchy loss of Bowman’s layer and diffuse fibrosis.

Presence of neovascularisation & inflammation on histopathology shows that tissue was in stage of inflammation & not regeneration at the time of transplantation and thus would require different approach of treatment post transplant to prevent complications.
