Abstract Details

Purpose:

We would like to draw attention to the diagnostic difficulties of sinus thrombosis.

Setting:

Pándy Kálmán County Hospitals' Ophthalmology Department, Hungary

Methods:

In a 14-year-old boy, following an infectious episode thunderclap headache dizziness, vomiting and uncertain epileptic symptoms occurred. Examination concluded epilepsy. The asymptomatic period ophthalmologic control found 2D papilla prominence on both eyes.

Results:

Emergency MRI showed a thrombus in the sigmoid sinus and proved venous hypoplasia in multiple passages. Mother’s heterozygous Leiden mutation was later proven in the child, too. After anticoagulation and dehydration the papilledema and all other symptoms disappeared.

Conclusions:

Otolaryngological diseases lie frequently in the background of children’s sinus thrombosis. Yet, we should think of the possibility of teratological and hereditary hematological diseases.
