Abstract Details

Purpose:

To present ocular manifestation in a patient diagnosed with haemochromatosis.

Setting:

Ophthalmology Department of Leicester Royal Infirmary, Leicester, United Kingdom.

Methods:

A 45-year-old Caucasian male suffering from haemochromatosis with no other medical history was referred to our clinic. Visual acuity, slit-lamp examination of the anterior segment of the eye, fundoscopy and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) were performed in the day of the examination. The patient underwent blood transfusion once per week and examined again after four weeks’ time.

Results:

Visual acuity at presentation was 6/6 in both eyes. Slit-lamp examination of the anterior segment revealed fine white opacities and aneurysmal dilatation of iris vessels, as well as pigmentary deposition on the lens of the right eye. Unremarkable findings on the examination of the fundus and review of the OCT scan. The patient underwent blood transfusion once per week and examined again after four weeks’ time. Iron levels were decreased by 1000 UI after treatment. Slit-lamp examination of the anterior chamber revealed reduction of lens pigmentary depositions and regression of the aneurysmal dilations of iris blood vessels.

Conclusions:

To the best of our knowledge this is the first case of documented aneurysmal dilatation of iris vessels and regression of these lesions after reduction of iron levels.
