Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate anterior segment parameters in patients with POAG, pseudoexfoliative glaucoma (PXG) and normotensional glaucoma.

Setting:

Ophthalmology department of Garcia de Orta Hospital, Almada, Portugal

Methods:

30 eyes of 15 patients with POAG (group 1), 30 eyes of 15 patients with normotensional glaucoma (group2) and 30 eyes of 15 patients with PXG (group3) were included in this study. Anterior chamber depth (ACD), anterior chamber volume (ACV), iridocorneal angle (ICA), central corneal thickness (CCT) and pupil diameters were compared between groups. Eyes with history of cornel pathology, uveitis, intraocular surgery, ocular trauma, diabetes, cataracts, systemic or topical medication that interferes in anterior segment parameters, more than 1 cylindrical and/or 3 spherical diopters of refractive errors were excluded.

Results:

ACD was significantly lower in Group 3 with values of 2,787±0,654mm (p=0,01). ACV was also lower in Group 3 (138,241±34,311 mm³, p=0,008). ICA was significantly different in the 3 groups (p=0,001). Group 2 showed a significant lower CCT with values of 529,867±26,800; p=0,000). The pupil diameter was also significantly different in the 3 groups with lower values for group 3 (p=0,026).

Conclusions:

The evaluation of the anterior chamber through Pentacam-Scheimpflug Imaging showed significant differences in anterior chamber parameters between the 3 groups of the study. We conclude that Pentacam-Scheimpflug Imaging is a quick, easy and noninvasive method, which quantifies differences in anterior chamber between different types of glaucoma.
