In vivo confocal microscopy findings in corneal diseases

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To describe the corneal findings in several corneal diseases as imaged with laser scanning in vivo confocal microscopy.

Setting:

The study was done at Universitary and Politechnic Hospital La Fe

Methods:

In vivo confocal microscopy images (Heidelberg Retina Tomograph II, Rostock Cornea Module) of 10 subjects with corneal diseases who had typical slit-lamp biomicroscopic findings were evaluated.

Results:

6 women and 4 men aged 7 to 64 years were included in this study. Laser scanning in vivo confocal microscopy revealed structures resembling corneal epithelium, stroma, endothelium and vascular structures in several corneal diseases (crystalline keratopathy, bullous keratopathy, mycotic keratitis, corneal dystrophy, keratoconus, bacterial keratitis, acanthamoeba keratitis, adenoviral infiltrates and metaherpetic corneal disease).

Conclusions:

In vivo confocal laser scanning microscopy provides a rapid, non-invasive, and high resolution scheme for diagnosing several corneal diseases. From a series of images taken during the clinical courses, this method is highly promising for use in monitoring treatment effects and identifying the recurrence of corneal pathologies.
