Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate changes in the parameters of anterior segment (AS) after cataract surgery and the correlation between these changes and intra ocular pressure (IOP).

Setting:

Clinical practice, prospective, no comparative study. Barraquer Ophthalmology Center,Barcelona, Spain

Methods:

Forty-two consecutive cases of Caucasian race were included in the study. Outcome measures were: IOP, anterior chamber depth(ACD),iris curvature (IC), angle opening distance at 500 ┬Ám from the scleral spur (AOD500,),angle recess area (ARA500) and trabecular iris space area (TISA500). The measures were realized before surgery, 2 weeks, and 3 months after surgery.

Results:

AOD500 was 0.6 mm and changed to 0, 8 mm and 0,4 at 2 weeks and 3 month respectively. TISA500 was 0.09 mm2 and increased to 0.35mm2 and 0,23mm2 at 2 weeks and 3 month respectively, ARA500 was 0.09 mm2 and increased to 0.38mm2, 0,26mm2 2 weeks and 3 month respectively. IC reduced signeficaly after surgery. The IOP before surgery was 23mmhg and reduced to 19, 18 mmhg during the study.

Conclusions:

Parameters of the anterior segment increased at 2 weeks after surgery to reduce slightly again at three month. These changes correlated to IOP lowering.
