Abstract Details

Purpose:

To describe safety and treatment outcomes after Trabectome-Phacoemulsification surgeries in eyes with well controlled open-angle glaucoma and cataract.

Setting:

Assaf Harofeh medical center, Israel.

Methods:

Ten first cases of Trabectome surgery were performed in combination with cataract surgery in patients with open angel glaucoma. Main outcome measures were IOP reduction and lowering of anti-glaucoma medication. Intraoperative and postoperative aspects and complications were documented systematically. Anterior segment OCT was performed postoperatively to demonstrate the trabeculotomy.

Results:

The average age was 76.44 ± 8.03. Preoperative mean IOP was 17.11 ± 2.42 mm Hg; the number of glaucoma medications was 2 ± 1.15. Postoperatively, mean IOP was reduced by 28.12% to 12.3 ± 3.43 mm Hg and the number of glaucoma medications was reduced to 1.6 ± 0.84 In 5 cases the surgeon graded the surgical procedure as “easy” and in 2 as “moderate”. Intraoperative reflux bleeding occurred in 9 cases.

Conclusions:

Minimal invasive glaucoma surgery with the Trabectome in combination with cataract surgery is safe, with a fast learning curve. Bigger series are required to demonstrate efficacy.
