Abstract Details

To study the efficacy and safety of accelerated contact lens assisted collagen cross-linking (CACXL) in patients with thin corneas with progressive keratectasia requiring cross-linking with riboflavin.

Dr. Agarwal's Eye Hospital and Eye Research Centre, Chennai, India.

Prospective interventional pilot study was carried out. Patients with progressive keratectasia and with less than 400 microns of stroma after epithelial removal were subjected to CXL using the contact lens assisted protocol and with an accelerated CXL setting of 10mW/cm2 for 9 minutes.

10 patients were included in the study. 3 were male and 7 were female. The average age was 20yrs. Average thickness after epithelial removal was 380 ± 32.9 µm. Application of the contact lens raised the thickness to more than 400 microns in all patients. No complications were encountered. No patient showed progression.

Accelerated CACXL shows promising results in the interim term. A longer study with more patients is recommended.
