Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare ocular surface characteristics after strabismus surgery with limbal and fornix incisions.

Setting:

Divyadrishti eye centre, Patna , India

Methods:

Thirty six eyes with horizontal strabismus ( both exotropia and esotropia) were randomly assigned to Group A (limbal incision) or Group B (fornix incision). Dry eye questionnaire, tear film breakup time (TFBUT), and Schirmer I test (SIT)were assessed preoperatively and at 1week, 2 weeks and 6 weeks ,postoperatively

Results:

In Group A, dry eye questionnaire scoresincreased , TFBUT and SIT decreased at postoperative weeks 1, 2, and 6. In the B group, dry eye questionnaire scores increased ,TFBUT and SIT decreased at postoperative weeks 1 and 2. All these ocular surface characteristics improved at final visit at 6 weeks probably because of dissolution of 8-0 vicryl by that time.

Conclusions:

Compared to fornix incision, limbal incision fares bad in terms of dry eye symptoms and tear film stability.
