Anterior chamber parameters measured by the Pentacam HR after uneventful phacoemulsification in normotensive eyes

Abstract Details

Purpose:

We set out to quantify changes in the anterior chamber volume (ACV), anterior chamber depth (ACD) and anterior chamber angle (ACA) measurements obtained by the Pentacam rotating Scheimpflug camera following uneventful phacoemulsification surgery in normotensive eyes.

Setting:

We enrolled 160 eyes (60 females, 100 males) of 160 consecutive patients at Sun Eye Hospital, Lucknow, India, undergoing cataract extraction in this prospective study. Patients with a history of glaucoma, angle-closure glaucoma or any other concurrent ocular disease were excluded.

Methods:

A detailed eye examination including intraocular pressure (IOP) measurement was performed and ACV, ACD and ACA measurements were obtained in each patient eye using the Pentacam HR before and 1 months after phacoemulsification and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation.

Results:

Mean preoperative ACV, ACD and ACA measurements were 112.2 ± 75.56 mm3, 2.74 ± 0.8 mm, 28.6 ± 31.6 °, respectively. One months postoperatively, mean ACV, ACD and ACA were 155.48± 32.46 mm3, 4.36 ± 0.5 mm and 45.4 ± 22.1 ° respectively. Postoperative mean ACV, ACD and ACA values in all parameters were significantly increased (p < 0.0001, p < 0.0001, p < 0.0001, respectively).

Conclusions:

Measurements obtained confirm that in normotensive eyes, the ACV and ACD increase and the ACA widens in all quadrants 1 months after uneventful phacoemulsification and IOL implantation. Rise in all Anterior Chamber Parameters are more significant where they are already low in Pre-operative period.
