Abstract Details

To compare between phaco-chop and stop and chop nucleotomy techniques.

Department of Ophthalmology, King Fahd Hospital of The University, Alkhobar University of Dammam

A prospective study of 84 consecutive cases of phacochop (group1) and another 63 consecutive cases of stop-and- chop (group 2). The following variables were considered: preoperative visual acuity, pachymetry, degree of nuclear sclerosis, axial length, anterior chamber depth, effective phaco time, ultrasound time, Percentage phaco power(%),corneal edema, visaul acuity 1 day,1 week, 1month postoperatively.

The effective phaco time, ultrasound time, percentage phaco power (%) was significantly less in group 1 for both the immature and mature cases. The visual rehabilitation was significantly faster in the first day and and on the first week postoperatively in the phaco-chop (group 1) for the mature cases whereas it was not significant for the immature cases between the two groups.

The phaco-chop technique is safer to the corneal endothelium as less ultrasonic energy was used. This accelerated the functional healing and protected the surrounding intraocular tissue.
