Abstract Details

Purpose:

to study the variability of the corneal endothelium after surgical treatment of cataract at patients with and without pseudoexfoliation (PXF) in relation to density of the nucleus

Setting:

State Institution 'Zaporizhya Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education Ministry of Public Health of Ukraine'

Methods:

Different age patients with cataract were assigned to have phacoemulsification and were examined using a non-contact specular microscope Topcon SP-3000P (Topcon corporation, Japan). All patients were divided on two groups: the first - 36 eyes with PXF, the second – 42 eyes without PXF. In all patients phacoemulsification was performed by one surgeon. Postoperative follow-up was at 1 day, 1 week and 1 month. Nucleus density were evaluated retrospectively for the cumulative dissipated energy (CDE) expended.

Results:

Postoperative monitoring revealed significantly greater cell loss and morpometric characteristics changes in PXF group especially in high density nucleus. The percentage of endothelial cell loss in cases of light nucleus density that is characterized by the mean CDE below 10, consist 5% in non PXF group and 13% in PXF group. Endothelial cell loss in cases with high nucleus density and CDE above 20, consist 32%, percentage of hexagonal cells decreased to 41 %, coefficient of variation of cell area increased to 41% at PXF group in comparison with non PXF group.

Conclusions:

Morphometric changes and percentage of endothelial cell loss were greater after cataract surgery in eyes with PXF than in eyes without PXF especially when the phacoemulsification of high-density cataracts is performed
