Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the efficacy using either conjunctival autograft combined with amniotic membrane transplantation (AMT) or free conjunctival autograft in pterygium surgery.

Setting:

Istanbul Medipol University ,Faculty of Medicine,Ophthalmology Department, Turkey. Mehmet Selim Kocabora, Cafer Tanrıverdio, Sevil Karaman Erdur, Göktuğ Demirci.

Methods:

The study included 73 eyes with primary pterygium of 73 patients. All eyes were randomised to undergo conjunctival autograft (36 eyes) or conjunctival autograft combined with AMT (37 eyes) after pterygium excision by a single surgeon. Main outcome measures included the time of reepithelization and also recurrence of pterygium.

Results:

The mean follow-up was 21.8 ± 6.6 months in the conjunctival autograft combined AMT group and 22.2 ± 6.5 months in the conjunctival autograft group (p=0.751). There was no statistically difference in patient ages between two groups. Conjunctival recurrence of pterygium was seen in 4 eyes (10.8%) in the conjunctival autograft combined AMT group and in 8 eyes (22.2%) in the conjunctival autograft group (p = 1.188). The mean reepithelization time was 5.0 ± 1.1 days and 6.5 ± 2.6 days in the conjunctival autograft combined AMT group and conjunctival autograft group, respectively (p = 0.02).

Conclusions:

The conjunctival autograft combined AMT group had a shorter reepithelization time than the conjunctival autograft group. There was no statistically difference in recurrence rates between two groups.
