Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare accuracy of the Verion image guided system respect to eye manual marking method, in AcrySof IQ Toric intraolcular lens (IOL) implantation.

Setting:

Primavista Eye Clinic, Rome, Italy

Methods:

20 eyes of 14 patients underwent cataract surgery with AcrySof IQ Toric IOL implantation. In Group A (10 eyes of 7 patients) implantation axis was been manually marked with a standard marking system. In Group B (10eyes of 7 patients) the implantation axis was automatically guided by the Verion System. Preoperative measures included objective refraction, best corrected distance visual acuity (BCVA) and ocular biometry. Postoperative measures included distance uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), subjective refraction and BCVA. Difference between expected and obtained implantation axis was calculated.

Results:

In Group A the UCVA was 0.85, BCVA was 0.96, the subjective refraction was 0.52D+/- 0.14SD, the postoperative astigmatism was 0.61D+/- 0.13SD. In Group B the UCVA was 0.91, BCVA was 0.98, the subjective refraction was 0.45D+/- 0.15SD, the postoperative astigmatism was 0.29D+/- 0.12SD. Difference between expected and obtained implantation axis in Group A was 7.5+/-2.1 degrees, in Group B was 4.4+/-1.5 degrees.

Conclusions:

The use of Verion image guided system seems to offer improved precision and control in cataract astigmatism surgery.
