Abstract Details

Purpose:

To analyse keratometry parameters measured by the Verion® system (Alcon) and standard Javal, IOLMaster ®(Carl Zeiss, Meditec) and Lenstar® (Haag-Streit) keratometry.

Setting:

Hospital de Braga, Portugal

Methods:

Retrospective analysis of keratometry values (k1, k2, k1 axis, k2 axis and cylinder values) measured by four different devices: the Verion, the Javal keratometer, the IOL-Master and the Lenstar. All eyes measured were of patients scheduled for cataract surgery, with no previous history of corneal or other ophthalmic surgery. Normality was tested with Kolgomorov test, the mean values were compared with t-test and correlation was calculated with Pearson correlation coefficient. A Bland-Altman plot was calculated to analyse the interchangeability between devices.

Results:

A total of 56 eyes were included in the study. There was no statistically significant difference between the mean values of keratometric astigmatism between the Verion, the Javal and the two optical biometers (p>0,05 for all comparisons). We found a strong and statistically significant correlation coefficient between the Verion and the Javal (R=0,9625), the Verion and the Lenstar (R=0,9545) and the Verion and the IOL-Master (R=0,8386). The Bland-Altman plot shows that all measurements can be used interchangeably with the measurement performed by the Verion.

Conclusions:

The values of corneal cylinder measured by the Verion can be used inter-changeably with the values measured by other common keratometers. The corneal measurement taken by the Verion seems safe and effective to use for the spherical and toric intraocular power calculations as well as for toric IOL aligment according to the flat corneal axis.
