Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the efficiency, safety and predictability of two fluidics sittings in hard cataract using the Centurion Ozil torsional phaco.

Setting:

Expert eye centre in Cairo, Egypt

Methods:

Chop efficiency using the centurion (Alcon) phaco machine. 100 cataracous eyes of grade 3 and four LOCS classification,divided into two groups, group 1 included 50 eyes operated using moderate fluidics parameters of 30 cc/min flow rate FR, 400 mmhg linear vacuum and 50mmhg intraocular pressure IOP. Group 2 included 50 eyes operated using high fluidics parameters of 50 cc/min flow rate FR, 600 mmhg linear vacuum and 50mmhg IOP Comparing the holding efficiency during chopping, anterior chamber AC stability and Consumed energy.

Results:

Group one showed better efficiency in holding the nucleus e less number of nucleus slipping from the phaco tip. 0.3+_ 0.1 in comparison to group two 1.7 +_ 0.8 , both groups stable AC. E no pupil diameter changes. Cumulative dissipated energy was less in group one 6.9+_2.8 in comparison to 8.1+_3.1 in group two.

Conclusions:

Moderate fluidics showed more safety, efficiency and predictability in denser nuclear cataract more
