Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the safety and efficacy of epithelium-off corneal collagen cross-linking and transepithelial corneal collagen cross-linking in patients with Pellucid Marginal Degeneration.

Setting:

Badr University hospital , Helwan University , Cairo , Egypt.

Methods:

Retrospective comparative review of patient with Pellucid Marginal Degeneration treated with epithelium-off corneal collagen cross-linking or transepithelial corneal collagen cross-linking.Preoperative and postoperative measurements of uncorrected and best corrected visual acuity, keratometry, corneal topography and pachymetry were assessed and compared with at least 12 months follow-up.

Results:

In the epithelium-off group (14 patients, 18 eyes; mean age, 26.75 ± 1.9 years),improvement was noted at 12 months postoperatively for the K max [-0.91 diopters (D), P = 0.01], K min (-2.2 D, P = 0.001), mean K (-1.17 D, P = 0.01).In the transepithelial group (11 patients, 14 eyes; mean age, 24 ± 3.9 years),improvement was noted at 12 months postoperatively for K max (-0.94 D, P = 0.02), K min (-1.94 D, P = 0.01), mean K (-1.42 D, P = 0.01). There were no significant difference between the two groups (P > 0.05).

Conclusions:

Epithelium-off corneal collagen cross-linking got slightly better effective results , though it got more painful , slightly more resolving postoperative complications than transepithelial corneal collagen cross-linking in patients with Pellucid Marginal Degeneration. FINANCIAL DISCLOUSRE: NONE
