Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the safety and efficacy of foldable IOL implantation under continuous fluid infusion of the anterior chamber, without Ophthalmic Viscoelastic Device (OVDs).

Setting:

Sohag University Hospital, Egypt.

Methods:

This study included 84 eyes suffering from age related cataract classified into 2 groups (42 eyes for each) who underwent phacoemulsification. Group A; underwent phacoemulsification with foldable IOL implantation under OVDs. Group B; will underwent phacoemulsification with foldable IOL implantation under continuous irrigation of the anterior chamber by intraocular infusion fluid by the irrigation hand piece from the left side port. All patients are examined at 1, 7 and 14 days and 1 and 3 months. The corneal endothelial cell count was measured preoperatively and at 3 months postoperatively.

Results:

Both groups were matched in age and grades of lens opacities. There were no significant differences in the mean endothelial cell loss and the incidence of postoperative corneal edema between both groups. There were no statistically significant differences between the two groups regarding the central corneal thickness or intraocular pressure measurements at any point in time.

Conclusions:

Foldable IOL implantation under continuous fluid infusion of the anterior chamber, without OVDs is safe and efficient. This technique can shorten the time of surgery and decrease the amount of OVDs needed. FINANCIAL DISCLOUSRE: NONE
