Comparison of IOL power calculation formulas using Lenstar

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate and compare accuracy of Olsen formula for calculating the intraocular lens (IOL) power using with Lenstar.

Setting:

Bozok University Faculty of Medicine, Ophthalmology Department, Yozgat, Turkey.

Methods:

Seventy two eyes of 72 consecutive patients were included to this prospective study. Biometric measurements were performed with the optical low-coherence reflectometry (Lenstar LS900, Haag-Streit AG). All patients underwent uncomplicated phacoemulsification and same hydrophobic acrylic intraocular lens (Acriva UD 613, VSY Biotechnology) was inserted in all cases. The IOL power calculation was performed with the Olsen formula and compared with the SRK/T, Holladay II and Haigis. The mean and median absolute errors (MAE, MedAE) and percentage of eyes within, ±0.50 D of predicted refraction and deviating over ±1.00 D of predicted refraction were calculated for each formula

Results:

The mean absolute error was 0.41±0,38 D in Haigis, 0.39±0.34 D in Olsen, 0.37±0,34 D in Holladay II and 0.37±0.33 D in SRK/T, respectively. There was no statistically significant difference in MAE and MedAE among the formulas. The percentage of eyes within ±0.50 D of predicted refraction was 71%, 57%, 66% and 63 % with the Olsen, Haigis, SRK/T,and Holladay formulas, respectively.

Conclusions:

These results suggest that the Olsen formula performs well and yields comparable refractive results with the other current formulas. FINANCIAL DISCLOUSRE: NONE
