To assess the functional vision, and objective task performance in eyes with a one piece aspheric full zone diffractive multifocal IOL.

A consecutive cohort of 30 eyes who had refractive cataract surgery or lens exchange surgery by a single surgeon using a one piece aspheric full zone diffractive multifocal IOL had functional vision assessment using the PANFOCAL VA method 4 to 8 weeks after surgery. At the same examination, an objective task assessment for intermediate computer vision and a range of near vision reading tasks in photopic and mesopic conditions was also carried out. Descriptive statistics were used to characterise the functional vision, and objective task performance of a one piece aspheric full zone diffractive multifocal IOL.
Functional vision assessment showed that the median snellens visual acuity achieved was 6/9 for distance, near photopic and near mesopic. The median intermediate visual acuity was 6/12. The majority of patients were able to see well enough to perform all near vision tasks both in photopic and mesopic conditions. Intermediate vision task performance was very varied with most eyes being able to perform laptop tasks but not desktop tasks.
The results indicate that the one piece aspheric full zone diffractive multifocal IOL provides a very good range of functional vision for distance, photopic and mesopic near vision tasks. Intermediate task performance was variable.
