Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the possible role of haptic configuration on the Effective Lens Position (ELP) of implants in the capsular bag.

Setting:

Cataract Clinic Neupré-Liège , Belgium

Methods:

One year postoperatively, we have recorded the dispersion in the refractive results of 30 Acrysof (Alcon) , 30 Tecnis (AMO) , and 30 MultiLink (Swiss Advanced Vision) .

Results:

In spherical equivalent diopters, the dispersion was 2.15 with Acrysof , 2.80 with Tecnis , 1.7O with MultiLink. (p=0.04)

Conclusions:

ELP is more constant when the connections between the optic and the equator of the capsular bag are multiple or more rigid. The large space created by cataract extraction and the fibrosis, or cells proliferation ,are obvious causes of variations in the optic position. Haptics highly flexible in the antero-posterior axis aggravate the inconsistancy of the ELP.
