Abstract Details



Purpose:

To evaluate the impact and effectiveness of Orbis child eye care project in controlling blindness in Southern Rajasthan and creating Infrastucture and measuring sustainability of project after its completion.

Setting:

Alakh Nayan Mandir ,Eye Institute ,Udaipur ,Rajasthan ,India

Methods:

A retrospective study was done at our Institute in Collabaration with Orbis International from april 2008 to March 2011.A participaotry appraisal of randomly selected key workers and beneficiaries children and thier parents was done and follow up of 90% cases was done to assess the visual outcome after surgeries.

Results:

Total of 92910 children were screened during this 3 year project ,20%(18676)were treated clinically ,7364 children had refractive errors and 554 surgries were done, besides this creting community awareness ,infrastructure development and teaching and training was done under this project which will be highligted..

Conclusions:

This project created a great impact in the tribal belt of this district ,community became aware that pediatric ophthalmolgy is a important and seperate branch and if patients are diagnosed and treated well by a specialist it can be a big achievement in saving sight of such needy children who are the future of nation and thus contribute to a significant level in reducing the economic and social burden over the country.
