Application of radiowave generator Surgitron in surgical treatment of strabismus

Purpose:

to evaluate advisability and effectiveness of radiowave generator Surgitron (manufactured by Ellman International Inc., USA), applied in surgical treatment of strabismus.

Setting:

The S.N. Fyodorov Eye Microsurgery Federal State Institution, Volgograd Branch

Methods:

were compared treatment outcomes of 25 radiosurgical procedures, performed with Surgitron device, and 29 conventional blade surgeries. Surgitron radiowave procedures were performed via electrode A8 in two operating modes: 28W “incision mode” (15 patients) and 25W “incision+coagulation mode” (10 patients).

Results:

in “incision mode” hemorrhage rate decreased by 9%. In conventional blade surgery bleeding was registered in 35% of cases, while during Surgitron powered procedures – in 26% of cases. Intra-method difference was statistically relevant (t>2,0, p<0,05). In “incision+coagulation mode” no bleeding was observed, which enabled reducing surgical duration by - 3ḟ0,5 min (p<0,05).

Conclusions:

application of radiowave generator Surgitron in surgical treatment of strabismus is highly advisable in order to eliminate risk of hemorrhagic complications and to reduce duration of surgical operation.
