Abstract Details

Purpose:

To determine the smoking habits in patients with keratoconus.

Setting:

Dunya Eye Hospital, Atakoy, Istanbul, Turkey

Methods:

We asked smoking habits of 132 keratoconus patients who diagnosed with topographically. Non-smokers were defined as those who sometimes smoke and who had never smoked. Smokers were defined as those who smoke everyday.

Results:

Of the 132 keratoconus patients, 49 were female, 83 of them were male. While 101 keratoconus patients ( % 76,51) were non-smoker, 31 patients (% 23,48) were smoker.

Conclusions:

Most of the keratoconus patients don’t prefer smoking. That may be because of the allergic tendency of these patiens. Usually they irritate from smoke and don’t like. In other aspect , smoking may lead to cross-linking of collagen in the cornea and may prevent the progression the keratoconus but further studies are needed in this regard.
