To determine and compare the expression of caspase-3 and caspase-9 in human lens epithelial cells of cataract subjects with and without diabetic retinopathy(DR)

Sixty patients were classified into 3 groups: patients without diabetic mellitus(DM) (Group 1), patients with DM but without DR (Group 2), and patients with DM and DR(Group 3). The anterior capsulotomy specimen was obtained from each patient during cataract surgery, and immunohistochemical stainning was performed for caspase-3 and caspase-9. The results were observed using the confocal microscope and were analyzed by relatively scoring. Duration of DM and hemoglobin A1c(HbA1C) levels were recorded.
Level of caspase-3 and caspase-9 expression was highest in group 3, followed by group 2 and group 1.(P<0.001, p <0.001, respectively) Expression of caspase-3 and caspase-9 was higher with longer duration of DM and with higher HbA1C level.
Intrinsic apoptotic pathway may be associated with diabetic cataracts with type 2 DM.
