School screening for refractive errors among primary school children between 10/3/2012 – 26/5/2012 in Sana’a City, Yemen

Purpose:

To evaluate the refractive errors among school children in Sana"a City – Yemen

Setting:

Sana" - Yemen

Methods:

The present study design was cross section study, was carried out at primary school in Sana"a, Yemen , during 10-03-2012 to 26-05-2012. Sana"a city divided into (10) districts, in which three governmental primary schools were selected randomly with coordination with the Ministry Education i.e. one male school and one female school (30) schools and seven private primary schools . 15169 students were selected from class one, third, fifth and eighth ,The collected data were analyzed using SPSS, version 21. randomly.

Results:

The total students 15269 students have been examined , 6439 were males and 8730 were females with the age 5years to 25 years . The results showed that 13588 ( 91%) students were normal and 1314( 8.7%) students were suffering from refractive errors , myopia was the first refractive errors among students , Astigmatism was the second refractive errors .

Conclusions:

The prevalence of RE among primary school children in Sana"a, accounted to be (8.7%) which is similar to other studies done in deferent countries Myopia was found to be the most prevalent type of RE followed by astigmatism, myopic astigmatism, hypermetropic astigmatism, and finally hypermetropia
