Seasonal variation in the occurrence of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) in Kashan, Iran

Purpose:

To evaluate the seasonal variation in occurrence of Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment (RRD) , This study or carried out.

Setting:

Matini Hospital Amirkabir Ave.

Methods:

In this retrospective study, medical records of 330 eyes of 330 patients who underwent surgical repair of RRD reviewed. Patients has been operated from April 2000-March 2011 in department of ophthalmology of Kashan university of medical sciences. Age , sex, month(and season) of occurrence and concomitant risk factors recorded and results analyzed with SPSS software.

Results:

Mean age of patient was 63 12 years ( range 12 – 84 years )and male to female ratio was 1.67 . The highest occurrence of RRD was in June (0.3%) , and lowest in September (5.34%) . Seasonal occurrence of RRD in order of frequency was in summer 29.4% , Spring 23.63% , winter 23.63% and fall 20.3% . RRD occurred mostly in 51 – 60 years age group.

Conclusions:

This study showed thatRRD occurs more in male than female , and there is no statistically significant difference in occurrence between months or seasons of a year.
