Abstract Details

Purpose:

Clinical retrospective study about 80 E.B.K treated patients.

Setting:

Private practice

Methods:

We evaluated the procedure itself in terms of duration and quality of the epithelial ablation zone[E.A.Z],and the patient recovery in terms of intensity of pain, healing and visual function with 1 year follow-up.

Results:

E.B.K. is a quick procedure [mean procedure time :10 seconds], technically easy to perform. It sweeps away and collect the epithelium layer by layer and never scratches the stroma..The e.a.z. regular and smooth without debris. the patient recovery is characterized by moderate pain and rather short healing[within 48 hours among 96% of the patients] The final visual results show not any case of under correction and only 2 cases of transitory grade 1 haze.

Conclusions:

E.B.K. for surface ablation in refractive surgery seems to be a quick, safe, precise procedure .The healing time is relatively tolerable in terms of pain and visual function. We need further studies to demonstrate a low rate of haze with high ablations.
