Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the changes in tear film stability (measured by tear break up time (BUT) and the tear secretion (measured by Schirmer test) between patients undergoing Epi-LASIK and LASIK

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology-Faculty of Medicine-Cairo University

Methods:

40 eyes undergoing Epi-LASIK and 40 eyes undergoing LASIK were evaluated..The BUT and Schirmer test were performed before surgery and 1 week, 1 month and 3 months postoperatively..Results were evaluated using the paired student t-test.

Results:

The was a statistically significant reduction in the BUT in both groups at 1 week (33.49% and 41.54%), at 1 month (20.54% and 31.15%) and at 3 months (13.18% and 22.31%) The Schirmer test was significantly reduced at 1 week (32.89% and 38.69%), at 1 month (20.73% and 29.18%) and at 3 months (10.20% and 19.02%)

Conclusions:

Epi-LASIK and LASIK lead to a significant reduction in the BUT and Schirmer 2 test values that improve gradually with time. The tear film stability is significantly worse after LASIK in comparison to Epi-LASIK
