Optical performance of apodized diffractive multifocal IOL with different add powers

Purpose:

To evaluate the optical image quality for aspheric apodized diffractive multifocal IOLs with +3.0 and +2.5 D ADD power.

Methods:

Modulation transfer function (MTF) values with aspheric +3D and +2.5D Add multifocal IOLs were measured on an model eye for a 3mm entrance pupil. The IOL was mounted in a wet cell with deionized water and inserted into an eye model with 0.2 microns of spherical aberration. MTFs are reported at 50 and 100 lp/mm. The optical bench was configured as a Badal optometer and through focus images of the ETDRS chart were measured. The IOL had a base power of 21D.

Results:

For a 3mm pupil, the MTF values at100 lp/mm were 49.2% and 34% at distance, 13.5% and 19% at near for +2.5D and +3.0D Add multifocal IOLs, respectively. Corresponding MTF at 50 lp/mm was 54.8% and 41% at distance, 13.5% and 25.7% at best near distance for the 2 IOLs. The best near distance was measured at 53 cm for +2.5D and 44 cm for +3.0D Add multifocal IOLs.

Conclusions:

The apodized diffractive multifocal showed high performance for distance and near vision as measured by the MTFs and good optical image quality as measured by the through-focus images.
