To evaluate the binocular functional vision (visual acuity for distance, intermediate and near) of our 22 cataract patients with implantation of monofocal accommodative IOLs.
Single site study, single surgeon at VISTA Eye Specialist, Malaysia.
The Crystalens Aspheric Optic (AO) IOLs have been used in our study. 44 eyes of 22 patients were evaluated at pre-op assessment and at post-op 1 week and 1 month. Monocular and binocular Uncorrected Visual Acuity (UCVA) and Best Corrected Visual Acuity (BCVA) were taken at post-op 1 week and 1 month. Targeted post-op refraction for dominant eyes was plano and for non-dominant eyes was either plano or -0.50D. Exclusion criteria included any eyes with pathology except for cataracts. However, hard brunescent cataracts, white intumesecent cataracts and polar cataracts were also excluded.
At post-op 1 month, the monocular mean uncorrected distance visual acuity (UCDVA) was 0.75ḟ0.19 with 73% (32eyes) achieving 20/32 (6/9) or better, mean uncorrected intermediate visual acuity (UCIVA) was 0.77ḟ0.18 with 84% (37eyes) achieving 20/32 or better and mean uncorrected near visual acuity (UCNVA) was 0.92ḟ0.28 with 73% (32eyes) achieving J6 (N8) or better. The binocular post-op mean uncorrected distance visual acuity (UCDVA) was 0.91ḟ0.12 with 100% (22pairs) achieving 20/32 (6/9) or better, mean uncorrected intermediate visual acuity (UCIVA) was 0.90ḟ0.14 with 100% (22pairs) achieving 20/32 or better and mean uncorrected near visual acuity (UCNVA) was 0.70ḟ0.19 with 100% (22pairs) achieving J6 (N8) or better.
Most patients implanted with Crystalens AO with or without using micro-monovision technique are able to have functional vision which is sufficient to perform their daily lifestyle activities without need for glasses for distance & intermediate visual acuity.
