To evaluate retinal nerve fiber layer thickness by Optic Cohorence Tomography (OCT) and its correlation with the rim volume obtained by Heidelberg Retinal Tomograph (HRT).

A total of 42 eyes of 21 patients with glaucoma were evaluated. All patients were under control with topical antiglaucomatous medication. Patients optic nerve head were evaluated by both OCT (Spectralis, Heidelberg Engineering, Germany) and HRT (Heidelberg Engineering, Germany) in the same time. RNFL thickness were evaluated by OCT in 6 segments which consist of superotemporal (TS), superonasal (NS), nasal (N), inferonasal (NI), inferotemporal (TI) and temporal (T) segments and the rim volume were evaluated by HRT. The rim volume value obtained by HRT were compared with each segment results obtained from HRT. The correlations were statistically analysed by Pearson Correlation coefficients test.
The mean age was 54.52ḟ10.05 years old. The mean rim value was 0.41ḟ0.23 mm3. The mean RNFL values in TS, NS, N, NI, TI and T segments were 121ḟ25.6, 99.1ḟ25.1, 69.8ḟ17.2, 99.1ḟ27, 132.5ḟ31.3, 64.3ḟ13.4 respectively. There was a significant correlation between RNFL thickness and the rim volume in N (r=0.35, p=0.02), NI (r=0.36, p=0.02), and TI (r=0.44, p=0.01) segments. But the correlation was not significant in T (r=0.2, p=0.21) TS (r=0.22, p=0.14) and NS (r=0.3, p=0.06) segments.
Anatomical destruction of optic nerve head segments in glaucoma patients were documented both with OCT and HRT. But for further evaluation to determine the correlation between these outcomes, the subsegmental analyses should be performed by HRT as well as OCT.
