Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the effectiveness of a new device introduced for accelerated corneal collagen cross-linking in cases of keratoconus

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Faculty of Medicine Cairo University

Methods:

53 eyes of 37 patients with mild to moderate keratoconus underwent accelerated collagen cross-linking (30m W for 3 minutes) using the Avedro KXL system. (Epithelium -off technique)Preoperative Pentacam images were obtained and the corneal hystresis was measured using the Ocular response analyzer ORA . The tests were repeated 6 months after surgery

Results:

52 eyes (98.1%) showed improvement. The mean K values were improved by an average of 1.3 diopters. The Q value and keratoconus indeces were improved. All ORA parameters were improved. 1 eye (1.89%) showed progression on pentacam maps and worsening of ORA values

Conclusions:

The Avedro KXL accelerated corneal cxollagen cross-linking system appears to be effective in arresting the progression of keratoconus.
