To measure corneal density of corneas with keratoconus using Scheimpflug quantitative imaging.
Case control study
63 patients (63 eyes) with clinical keratoconus and clear corneas and 51 healthy control patients (51 eyes) were measured with the densitometry program of the Pentacam Scheimpflug imaging system (Oculos Inc, Wetzlar, Germany) (0=no density, 100=tissue completly opaque). The t-Student option was use to compare groups.
Density of corneas with keratoconus (29,3 ±5,3) was higher than in healthy patients ( 25,8 ±3,5) (p= 0,001).
To our knowledge, no previous study has examined the relationship between corneal densitometry and keratoconus. These results shows that corneal density is significantly higher in keratoconus, even in clear corneas, but its clinical significance remains unknown.
