To report a positive post operative recovery of corneal transparency after DSAEK (dechemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty) in 4 patients affetcted by herpetic endothelitis
S. Bassiano Hospital, Dept. of Ophthalmology, Bassano del Grappa, Italy
Four phakic eyes of four patients underwent DSAEK after diagnosis of herpetic hendothelitis. Herpes simplex virus was detected in intraoperative endothelial removed tissue by performing PCR (protein chain reaction). All patients were treated before and after surgery with oral acyclovir, topical ganciclovir and steroids for six months after surgery. Post operative follow up was 1 year.
After one year all the corneal grafts were clear with no inflammation or rejection. Visual acuity was completely recovered with hyperopic shift
DSAEK in phakic eyes that suffered from Herpetic endothelitis, seems to be effective to recover visual acuity and corneal transparency.
