Combined intrastromal injection of Amphotericin B and topical fluconazole versus topical Amphotericin B in treating of keratomycosis

Purpose:

The study compared the efficacy of combined therapy of intrastromal single injection of amphotericin B and topical fluconazole versus the monotherapy of topical amphotericin B alone in treating cases of keratomycosis

Setting:

Ophthalmology Department , Zagazig University , Egypt

Methods:

The stydy is a prospective comparetive study included 2 groups of patients with keratomycosis, the first group treated by single intrastromal injection of amphotericin B 0.02 mg-ml beside topical fluconazole 2mg-ml and the second group treated by topical amphotericin B 0.3 mg-ml alone , both groups were statistically analyzed according to healing percentage and duration and toxic drugs effects

Results:

The results revealed that the group treated by the combined therapy shows high percentage of healing 73% with mean duration 24 days versus 55% with mean duration 37 days in the second group of topical treatment only also the first group showed less toxic manifestation than the second group

Conclusions:

combined intrastromal injection of amphotericin B and topical fluconazole can provide a good modality in treatment of cases of keratomycosis for high potent antifungal effects, shorter healing duration and less toxicity
