Bilateral cataract extraction: a review of first 14 cases at Navneet Hospital, India

Purpose:

Indication of bilateral cataract extraction are increasing in practice. Following are some indications 1 old age 2 Bed ridden patients 3 Patient can not walk easily 4 paralytic or quadriplegic patient 5 both eye mature cataract 6 patients coming to the center from long distance

Setting:

Cases done at Navneet Hospital , Solapur - INDIA

Methods:

This study is from 1 st march 2012 to 28 february 2013 . All cases are done under topical anaesthesia all cases undergone phaco surgery with foldable IOL implantation. All cases went well. In one case capsulorhexis runaway after successful surgery in fellow eye. this case is converted from phaco to SICS . Basic thing which is needed for these surgeries is Operation theater with laminar air flow facility where filtered air is coming through hepa filter ( count is < than 1000 microns )

Results:

There is no specific complication occured. Due to topical anaesthesia , no more quantity of xylocaine with or without adrenaline ( 6 to 8 cc ) is needed. Real advantage is early rehabilitation and patients are extremely happy

Conclusions:

If Surgeon is having Operation theater with laminar air flow should think to do Bilateral Catarat extraction in indicated cases. This will not only helpful to patients but for surgeons also. Only thing is needed is mind set of surgeon
