Abstract Details

Purpose:

To calculate the incidence of Mature senile cataracts getting operated in a tertiary care centre of western India

Setting:

MGM Medical college, Kamothe, Navi Mumbai

Methods:

It is a Retrospective analysis of the OT records. Mature Senile Cataract is defined as brown to white cataracts beyond LOCS NO6, after age of 40years. Total eyes operated in year Feb2012 to Jan 2013 were 808, out of which 85 were Mature cataract. All patients between the age group 41 to 90years were included in the study.

Results:

10.51% of all the cataract operated at our centre were mature cataract. Age group where maximum mature senile cataract were recorded were between 61-70 years. Males presented with a higher incidence of 58.82% (50 out of 85)

Conclusions:

The higher incidence of mature cataract in our centre could be attributed to following factors-1. several rural pockets surrounding our centre where there is no ophthalmic OT set up. 2. Ignorance and lack of awareness in the general rural population.
