Purpose:

To evaluate biometry and intraocular lens position before and 1 week after regular phacoemulsification cataract surgery with LENSTAR BIOMETER

Setting:

Hospital de lṀEsperança, Barcelona, Spain

Methods:

27 cataractous eyes have been evaluated with Lenstare Biometer. Before cataract surgery the parameters measured were: Axial Length(AL), corneal thickness (CCT), distance between corneal epithelium and anterior cristaline capsule (AD), distance between corneal enthotelium and anterior cristaline capsule (ACD) and Lens thickness. One week after cataract surgery the parameters measured were: corneal thickness (CCT), distance between corneal epithelium and intraocular lens (AD2), distance between corneal enthotelium and intraocular lens (ACD2).

Results:

27 eyes (14 rights, 13 lefts) of 27 patients (19 females, 8 males) with ages between 60 and 87 years old ( average: 82) have been evaluated. The average corneal thickness before surgery was 533,5 microns and 576 microns after surgery. The average AD before surgery was 3,00 milimeters and the average AD2 after surgery was 4,06 milimeters.

Conclusions:

Due to eye anatomy and after cataract surgery the intraocular lens has a posterior location with respect to the anterior cristaline capsule. This displacement is quite important for intraocular lens power calculation. In our cohort of eyes we found that, on the average, a 37% of the cataractous lens thickness should be added to the distance between corneal epithelium and anterior cristaline capsule (AD) to reach the postoperative distance between corneal enthotelium and intraocular lens (AD2).
