Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare intraoperatively and postoperatively between phaco-chop and stop-and-chop nucleotomy techniques.

Setting:

Ophthalmology Department King Fahd Hospital of The University Alkhobar, Saudi

Methods:

A prospective study of 100 consecutive cases of phacochop(group1) and another 100 consecutive cases of stop-and- chop(group2). The following variables were considered: preop VA, central corneal thickness, degree of nuclear sclerosis, axial length, anterior chamber depth, effective phaco time,US time, Percentage phaco power(%),corneal edema, VA 1day,1week, 1month post operatively

Results:

The effective phaco time,US time,Percentage phaco power(%) was significantly less in group1, The visual rehabilitation was significantly faster in the first day & and on the first week post operatively in group1

Conclusions:

The phaco-chop technique is safer to the corneal endothelium as less ultrasonic energy was used. This accelerated the functional healing and protected the surrounding intraocular tissue
