Do we need to use viscoelastics for implanting IOLs?

Purpose:

To demonstrate the technique of implanting IOL"s with a constant irrigation of BSS through an anterior chamber mantainer without the use of Viscoelastic agent

Setting:

Krishna Eye Centre, Mumbai, India

Methods:

100 patients underwent sucessful Cataract surgery following which Intra Ocular lens was implanted under a constant flow of BSS through an anterior chamber mantainer without the use of any viscoelastic agent. Intra operative complications and post operativ rise of Intra ocular pressure were noted

Results:

3 patients had difficult insertion of Intra Ocular lenses. 1 patient had posterior capsular rent during implantation. None of the patients showed a post operative rise of Intra Ocular pressure

Conclusions:

Implantation of IOL with constant flow of BSS through an Anterior chamber mantainer without the use of any viscoelastic agent is a safe and easy technique, especially in patients of Glaucoma undergoing Cataract suregry
